WHAT DOES THE DAY INVOLVE?

Over the course of the day, you will learn how to control your gas torch in order to create texture within your silver using granulation & reticulation techniques.

Both require careful controlled use of the flame to purposefully melt your metal.  Granulation is the formation of small solid beads of metal which are soldered or fused to the surface of your design. Reticulation is the repeated heating, cooling & pickling of your metal over several cycles, to eventually melt and cool the surface layer, resulting in unique rippled textures.

The course approach will be experimental - reticulation is a technique where the results cannot easily be forward planned or replicated which is part of its charm. Granulation requires a fairly steady hand and some degree of patience.

If time allows, and if you wish, you may make your reticulated and granulated pieces of material into some wearable pieces on the day.  However you may like to just practice and learn the techniques during the day in order to use them at a later date.  You can also spend the day using these new techniques to create a stock of component parts and textured materials for use later on in your own time.  The day will be fairly open for you to choose what you would like to do, and we will support you with demonstrations.

You will:

  1. Go over the basics of using the gas torch, how to control & manipulate the metal using the flame
  2. Learn what reticulation is and how to do it.
  3. Learn how to form metal beads / grains and solder them onto your material to create the granulation effect
  4. Learn the limitations of both techniques and how to get the best results for your designs
  5. Learn how to finish your metal using various techniques to give different visual effects

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

None, all abilities are welcomed. We support you throughout the session and provide demonstrations to show you the techniques and steps needed to create your project.

CLASS SIZE:

WHAT'S INCLUDED?

  • All tools and consumables are supplied

YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH:

One piece of 3.5 cm x 3.5 cm 0.8mm silver sheet (sheet silver to reticulate).

One length of 1.5mm silver round wire 20 cm long (a base wire for pendant links as pictured).

One length of 0.9 mm silver round wire 50 cm long (good for granulation and earring posts).

We do have more silver to purchase on the day if you require.

WHAT TO BRING:

  1. Any Scrap scrap silver you may have from previous projects - wire offcuts are especially good for granulation, although any offcuts will do, and old scrap pieces of silver can be melted in class and milled to make sheet to use for reticulation.
  2. Any simple, ready made items of jewellery you may wish to embellish with granulation or reticulation.  Your tutor will be able to assess their suitability for these techniques in the class.  Some items may not be suitable.
  3. An open mind and be prepared to come up with some unique and sometimes unexpected results.

For safety reasons, during each class, you are required to wear appropriate footwear, we request that no open toed shoes are worn within Workshop 925.

Long hair should also be tied back when working with the equipment. You may also wish to bring a notebook. We have handouts for many demonstrations, but there are always many tips and tricks given verbally by the tutor, which some might like to keep note of.

Also pack your own lunch, snacks and drinks for the session. We have tea and coffee supplies you are welcome to help yourself to but make sure you bring enough refreshments and supplies to keep you going during the day.
